Why Digital Citizenship?

In compliance with Michigan legislation, E-Rate, and the Children’s Internet Protection Act, Catholic Central High School addresses the appropriate and ethical use of information technology in the classroom so that students and teachers can distinguish lawful from unlawful uses of copyrighted works, including the following topics: the concept and purpose of both copyright and fair use; distinguishing lawful from unlawful downloading and peer-to-peer file sharing; and avoiding plagiarism and provides for the education of minors about Internet safety, including appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking sites and in chat rooms, cyberbullying awareness and response, and protect online privacy and avoid online predator.

What does this mean to you as a student?

State and federal laws require any schools that provide students with 1:1 technology to provide lessons to help you to understand the AUP and to ensure you practice good Digital Citizenship.

During high school, students must develop the skills that will allow them to thrive not just in the present world, but in the world of their future that is constantly evolving. Navigating one’s self in digital mediums can be overwhelming, and a specific knowledge base and skill set is needed to safely and responsibly use both the internet and technology.

This Course is ISTE-aligned and encourages conversations such as: How much time on Instagram is too much for my mental and emotional well-being? What do social networking sites know about me? And, how can I use the opportunities offered by an interconnected digital world safely and ethically? The articles and accompanying resources will promote an understanding of how to build and maintain an online identity, engage in positive social interactions online, know and apply rights and obligations of intellectual property, manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security, and more.

The course contains four lessons, each centered on these guiding questions:

Lesson 1: What is my digital identity and how does it affect my real life?
Lesson 2: How can I make responsible, safe decisions online?
Lesson 3: What are my rights and responsibilities when it comes to sharing content online? Why does this matter?
Lesson 4: What do companies and people online know about me? How can I protect my privacy?

Each of the four lessons contains an introductory page that highlights the relevant skill, followed by a short video or article and quiz to ensure you understand the topic.
